International Women’s Day is globally celebrated on the 8th of March. One of the initiatives Diamond Woman supported in commemoration of this special day, was the WIMBIZ Annual Lecture.
The WIMBIZ Annual lecture which took place at the Muson Centre in Onikan was well attended by women from various industries. The theme of lecture which was delivered by the Honorable Minister for Solid Minerals Development- Dr. Kayode Fayemi was “Crisis of Values: Reclaiming Our Society”.
Aishah Ahmadthe Chairperson for WIMBIZ gave the welcome address. In her address, she urged women everywhere to take their place as leaders, and get involved in decision making processes. She also highlighted the role WIMBIZ has played in empowering women over the last fifteen years.According to Aishah, “If we can fix our values, we can fix our nation”. Aishah introduced the Honorable Minister to deliver the lecture for the day.
Dr. Fayemi in his lecture remindedparents, that they are the guardians and caretakers of the next generation and that the society has a role to play in protecting the weak and vulnerable. He further stated that a nation cannot rise above the values of its citizenry.
He also reminded the participants that it was important to note that universal adult suffrageonly became a reality in Nigeria in 1979 when women in the north were allowed to participate in elections for the first time. As such this right shouldnot be taken for granted, rather it should be maximized by women everywhere for the good of our society.
The interactive question and answer session was moderated by Ayisha Osori, former CEO of the Nigerian Women’s Trust Fund, who highlighted some striking thoughts from Dr. Fayemi’s paper. She stated the importance of placing a premium on education as a means to reclaiming our values.
Participants at the lecture also had the opportunity to ask Dr. Fayemi questions on the Nigerian value system and how we can reclaim our society.
At theend of the lecture, Diamond Woman held a raffle draw to reward 3 lucky participants. A grand prize worth 250,000 naira was won by one lucky participant and two consolation prizes were also won courtesy of Diamond Woman.
